At the April 1 meeting of Greensboro City Council, multiple Black leaders and community organizers called for investment in their Southeast Greensboro neighborhoods, which they accused city leadership of having long ignored.

Deena Hayes-Greene, co-founder of the Gorrell Street Association, Chair of the Guilford County School Board, and co-chair of the International Civil Rights Museum, began by citing a report from 11 years ago that “our region has historically excluded marginalized voices from planning processes.” When that report was originally presented, said Hayes-Greene, one Council member allegedly commented “Yeah, yeah, I’ve heard it all before.”
